Carter G. Woodson: The Reason we Celebrate BHM

Updated: May 4, 2021

Have you ever wondered why we celebrated Black History Month? More specifically why we celebrate during the month of February.

Well, it isn't because it is the shortest month of the year (which would be very disrespectful) but was a plan from Carter G. Woodson a historian who started a group now known as the Association for the study of African American life and History also known as (ASNLH).

That group on1926 would later declare the second week of February to be "Negro History Week". This specific week was picked because it around the birthdays of Fedrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln (two important people who played a role in eliminating slavery).

Nonetheless many felt that one week wasn't enough and colleges around America would celebrate it for one whole month.

President Gerald Ford in 1976 declared that February was Black History Month and ever since many Americans celebrate this month-long holiday with pride and joy.
