Claudette Colvin the Women who Inspired Rosa Parks

Updated: May 4, 2021

Claudette Colvin

We wouldn't have Rosa Parks without Claudette Colvin and that's a fact.

Colvin was the inspiration for Rosa Parks not giving up her seat.

When Colvin was 15 years old she was too on a bus that was segregated. And understandably she didn't want to sit at the back of the bus because she has darker skin. However, when a white woman was projecting she should she had two options. One was to suck it up and move or to challenge the system (which I personally like more).

And ironically enough she did. And that wasn't an easy thing to do because her consequence was being arrested at 15 years young.

Now you may wonder why do we learn about Claudette Colvin instead of Rosa Parks.

Well, I have the answer it's because Rosa Park had the "image". Light-skinned, older, and not pregnant.

For the NAACP image was everything which is understandable. They wanted to express their frustration without any backlash.

Nonetheless, Rosa Parks played a huge role in the civil rights movement, and she did get arrested which made her the symbol of resistance (which I look up to). But we should also give Claudette Colvin her flowers because she deserves it (and she's still alive).

Thank You Claudette Colvin for being a pioneer.
