Sarah Vaughan the Icon in Jazz and Everywhere Else

Sarah Vaughan

Talented, Beautiful, and Iconic are a few words I would describe Sarah Lois Vaughan.

She was born on 3/27/1924 in Newark, NJ. If I had to name three of my favorite female jazz singers, Sarah would in the top 3. She may not be very known to our generation but she had won four Grammy Awards which is pretty insane, considering the fact that I haven’t won a single trophy in my life.

She also had many nicknames like “The Divine One”, “The Velvet Fox”, "Queen of Bepop" and “Sassy” because of her unique style which was much needed after WWII.

The fact that she was a black successful woman that was living in the mid-1900s is so heartwarming because it gave hope to other black female artists that even when the odds are against you, your dreams are still attainable.
