Why does music mean so much to teenagers?

Adults sometimes wonder why we spend all of our time on our phones, with our headphones on whether we’re scrolling through TikTok, watching Instagram stories, watching clips on youtube or simply listening to music on Spotify, we’re practically 24/7 listening to music, hearing simple sounds, and we feel connected to those sounds like they always belonged in our ears.

Sometimes we don’t just listen to the melody but we also pay attention to the words and understand them, we can relate to them, we can feel them, we just feel comfortable when we listen to music. Maybe it feels less lonely to have someone that actually understands you, that doesn’t judge you…

they say that it’s always better to listen rather than talk, maybe that’s why we like music, because we’re listening, not speaking, not looking, just actually hearing what someone is saying, understanding what they mean, enjoying it, and learning something from it?

Some songs make me experience things that I never felt before, things that I can’t explain, feel nostalgic about stuff that never even happened to me, and I believe that every teenager likes music so much because we all need to feel comforted about everything going on. Life might feel a little heavy most of the time and then there’s this melody that comes up out of nowhere, that is so beautiful and so simple and tells a whole story without feeling the need to speak, it tells a whole person’s story, it is their art and it’s what makes them who they are and that’s how art is supposed to make you feel, it’s supposed to be nice, to make you happy to remind you that you’re not alone and that the whole earth might be going through tough days but we can get past them.
